Viscosity Index Improvers:
How they actually work.

Why a 5W-30 stays a 5W-30 from a cold start in Jammu to a thermal load in Chennai — explained at the polymer level.

A multigrade oil is a magic trick that's actually polymer chemistry. The base oil alone — say a Group II 6 cSt stock — has a viscosity index in the 95–100 range. Left alone, that base oil would thicken aggressively when cold and thin aggressively when hot. The trick is that you can blend a polymeric additive into it that changes shape with temperature: tightly coiled when cold (taking up little space, contributing little to viscosity), expanded when hot (taking up more space, propping up viscosity that the base oil is losing).

That polymer is the Viscosity Index Improver, or VII. It's why a 5W-30 behaves like a low-viscosity 5W at -25 °C and like a higher-viscosity SAE 30 at 100 °C from the same drum.

The Three Chemistries You'll See

OCP — Olefin Copolymer

Ethylene-propylene copolymers, sometimes ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDM-type). Lowest cost per VI gain, dominant in HDD and industrial multigrade applications. Shear-stable in the medium range. Common in 15W-40 CK-4 oils. Tends to have low-temperature performance drawbacks that you compensate with PPD.

PMA — Polymethyl Methacrylate

Higher cost per VI unit but two advantages: better low-temperature pumpability (often eliminates the need for separate PPD) and better shear stability. Common in passenger-car high-performance oils, hydraulic HV grades, and applications where low-temperature performance matters.

Star Polymers

Hydrogenated styrene-isoprene or styrene-butadiene star architectures. Premium VII with the best shear stability and the highest VI gain per percent treat. Used in long-drain HDD, OEM-approval oils, and racing applications. Cost makes them inappropriate for commodity blends.

Why Shear Stability Matters

A VII polymer molecule is a long chain. Long chains can be torn apart by shear in a bearing, a piston ring, a hydraulic pump vane. When that happens, the polymer breaks into smaller fragments that contribute less to viscosity — so your 5W-30 in the can looks like a 5W-30, but after 50 hours of high-stress service it might be a 5W-20 in the sump.

This is why shear stability matters. It's quantified by the Shear Stability Index (SSI). OCPs are around SSI 30–45. PMAs are SSI 10–25. Stars are SSI 2–5. A 5-point SSI difference can mean the difference between staying in-grade or going out-of-grade for an OEM approval.

How to Pick One

The starting point is the application:

For most formulators, the practical move is to start with the cheapest polymer that passes shear stability for your spec — and then move up if you fail. Don't over-engineer.
