View product →EP (extreme pressure) additives protect gear teeth where elastohydrodynamic film breaks down — typically a hypoid axle under load, a worm gear, or a shock-loaded industrial drive. The chemistry works by forming a sacrificial reaction film of iron sulfide and iron phosphate on the contact surface, preventing micro-welding and scuffing.
The trade-off: aggressive EP chemistry attacks yellow metals (bronze, copper alloys) used in synchroniser rings and worm gears. So a single "gear oil additive" isn't a universal answer. GL-4 chemistry is milder, suited to manual transmissions with brass synchros. GL-5 is more aggressive, suited to hypoid axles. MT-1 sits in between for commercial heavy-duty manual transmissions. We supply each calibration separately — and a combined GL-4/GL-5 system for OEMs that want a single oil for both.
